Prof. Wullobayi’s participation in international symposium

Martin Awaana Wullobayi, Director of Studies of PISAI, participated in the international symposium on “Inclusion or Exclusion: The Self and the Other in Sacred Texts and Human Contexts”, organised by Nazareth College’s Hickey Centre for Interfaith Studies and Dialogue and the Chair for Islamic & Interfaith Studies of the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) on 22-24 May 2023.

Prof. Wullobayi presented a paper entitled “Inclusion and Exclusion of Religious Groups in National Identity Discourse: The Approach of the Republican Brotherhood of Sudan”. The paper argues that non-Muslims have often been denied their rights as full citizens in an Islamic State. Yet, Muslim voices like Maḥmūd Muḥammad Ṭāhā, founder and spiritual leader of the Republican Brotherhood, can be of central importance in harmonising a society that seeks peaceful coexistence and the rights of all its citizens.

The symposium was a moment to gain new insights into the complex relationship between politics, religion, and identity.
